Notes : The Holroyd district was famous for its brick and tile works, due to the fine clay deposits located under the top soil. The site that would become Central Gardens, was originally the site of Arthur Todd Holroyd’s Sherwood Scrubs Drain, Tile and Pottery Works. The Walker Benson company took possession of the site in 1917 and continued brick and tile manufacturing activities until the 1960s. The site remained vacant until the 1970s when Holroyd Municipal Council acquired the site, including the chimneystack, clay pit and polluted water hole. Development of the site began in 1975 to convert the area for passive recreation purposes and was completed in 1977.
The clay pit was converted into an artificial lake with a fountain and waterfalls. Other features included an amphitheatre, native walks and zoo, demonstrating reuse of land once used for early industrial interests.
